"Long Island's Going to be a Nature Preserve!!" by guest on June 1, 2008, 8:55 pm, in category General

It was recently released to the public that the Trust For Public Land is agreeing to purchase Long Island for preservation.
Our future generations will look back with gratitude at this responsible act and the Owls, Ospreys, Otters, Painted Buntings, Foxes and Raccoons are no doubt relieved from their years of nail biting anxiety over the fate of their homes. (please excuse the anthropomorphizing)
What a wonderful ending to this long, uncertain, emotion filled drama.

We South Carolinians are blessed with our rich coastal habitats. We are a state proud of our heritage and a state proud of our wild beauty. We can not let the lure of profits or personal gain reduce us to a condition many other less ecologically aware states have found themselves in. It is prudent that the preservation of Long Island and others like it are the priorities that dominate the minds of our local and state leaders.

Dear FB and James Island friends:
This morning (March 10), I e-mailed our State Representative Wallace Scarborough asking that he support the current funding and the additional funding of 20 million for the State Conservation Bank. I also recommended that part of the funding be used to save / protect Long Island from being developed.
This year the South Carolina Conservation Bank is seeking 20 million in addition to the funding it normally receives from the deed reco..... Comments

We spend 2 billion dollars each week on a very questionable war that highlights imperialism, orphans, devastated families (including many Americans), and an eroding international opinion of American Democracy.
At the same time conservation efforts in America are perpetually struggling to find funds to save our quickly disappearing, priceless natural habitats.
Record war driven profits are being experienced by many corporations, several of which are very close to t..... Comments

With all due respect, I think rather we are shooting ourselves in the foot (and the hearts of our children) if we do not save the Long Islands of our world.
I imagine the person expressing their feelings in the previous post must be connected somehow to the development effort. I am sorry that this person feels so much on the defensive. It is not the intention of this website to attack or promote animosity, but rather to promote a peaceful solution by encouraging th..... Comments

Particularly telling was:

And if I would like a view of the "unspoiled beauty" of Goat Island from *my* residence on Long Island, then I'm just out of luck, eh?

There is simply no way to "develop" this Island without loosing the most important characteristics and without destroying what is there. I am a design professional and work with developers all the time. I depend on them for my livelihood, so I am NOT anti development. However this is a "special" case and one piece of property that should be left in it's natural state. Mr. Kimmel, please sell the island to the conservation interests. This would be a win,win for bo..... Comments

My uncle Elbert Britt and cousin Brenda used to keep their horses out on Long Island. Brenda had a beautiful Tennessee Walker Stallion. The horses roamed the island mostly wild and free until Elbert and Louise retired and moved them to their cabin in Cottageville. More fond memeories are of pulling a sein net through the creeks with my Dad and Uncles and cousins as a child. We basicly caught our own food and lived off the water. These days it's hard to find a decent place to crab. It..... Comments

I just read in the Greenville News about a developer's plan to build a bridge for access and then 50 or so homes on the island. I hope this doesn't happen. The area should become a protected natural habitat so the beauty and purity of it can last forever. Any development, regardless of how supposedly minimal it is, of such a delicate habitat disturbs its balance and it can never fully recover from it. We who love and respect the coastal environments want the peace of mind t..... Comments

The group of 15, many students who are new to Charleston, kayaked out to Long Island with Coastal Expeditions. While sitting in our boats beside the island we learned about the proposed development plans from Megan of the CCL and experienced the island's uniqueness and beauty by paddling into the interior via a small creeks. In the long run, beauty, green space, sea grass, trees and all that this inriches and other undeveloped land has to offer will out-weigh the short term gains from development. The value, in terms of and the value in terms of unspoiled land, to all of us on Folly will be greater if we act now to preserve what attracted most of us to the island. Time and again, preservation has proved to be the wise choice. Dave & Nappy Hetzler, 711 W. Ashley Comments
